Institution of Marriage

Marriage in a broad sense means a legally and socially sanctioned union of a man and a woman that accords them the  status of  husband and wife and to their off springs as legitimate children being governed by laws that prescribe the rights and duties of each party to the marriage.

Earlier Marriage was considered a religious subject in almost all the religions and was solemnized and lived as an eternal and permanent union as per set norms of  different religions. It was the saying,

“Marriages are settled in Heaven and Solemnized on earth”

Today this saying seems more relevant,

“Marriages are Settled on Earth, Solemnized on Earth and Lived on Earth”

as practically Marriage is a consensual and contractual legal union of a man and a woman to provide them the social and legal status of husband and wife.

A marriage, solemnized whether religiously or legally, is a legal contract which carries lot of promises, obligations, rights, duties and liabilites etc. Unlike other financial contracts,  if marriage  contract breaks midway, loss is irrecoverable to both the husband and the wife which can't be compensated by any means.

To avoid irrecoverable losses and to live a happy and harmonious married life, everyone  going to marry need to understand :

  • Why to make the contract/Why to marry?
  • Whom to make the contract?/How to select marriage partner?
  • What are the features of the contract?
  • How to sustain the contract lifelong?
